The Church at the Grave, also named the Church of The Assumption of St. John of Rila was built about 1746 and rebuilt in 1820.  His first burial was in the cave.  Then he was moved several times because each king wanted the saint's body in their capital.  In 1496 he is returned to Rila Monastery
Just across from the spring is the rock where St. John of Rila (Ivan Rilski) prayed every day, facing east.  He lived with the four basic elements:  earth, fire, water and air or wind.

Rila Monasery was founded in the l0th century by the Bulgarian monk St. Ivan of Rila and was rebuilt in the l3th -l4th century. From that time are the fortress tower (1334), the bishop's throne, richly carved doors and some manuscripts, icon-paintings and church plates. In the l5th century, when Bulgaria fell to the Ottoman Turks, the monastery was abandoned for a short time but in the second half of the same century it was restored to a new life. The Rila Monastery has been listed as a world monument of culture. Leave the bustle of Sofia and travel the 110-km road through tranquil countryside to the heart of Rila Mountains - the highest mountain on the Balkan. The legends, history, beautiful nature and art are all abundant in and around Rila Monastery (UNESCO). From your guide you will learn everything about them in an informative and entertaining way. Your guide will trace and illustrate the history of the biggest Bulgarian monastic complex with the lecture in the monastery museum. In the courtyard, while admiring the vivid frescoes of the main church, you will understand about the worldview and morals of the most notorious Bulgarian painters of the 19th century. Inside the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin church, you will see the biggest gilded iconostasis on the Balkans, the grave of the last Bulgarian monarch (who played a significant part in saving the Bulgarian Jews during the WWII) and much more. You will have plenty of free time to also explore the monastery yourself. Lunch can be arranged a nearby restaurant, where the tasty local delicacies have their own interesting colloquial stories.
